Discuss the life or work experiences that may have influenced your selection, including whether these experiences were positive or negative. Most importantly, explain why your project is important to you, as well as to the larger community. Write an entry of words minimum explaining how your project relates to two of the course objectives, Objective 12 and one or two others between 1 and 11 do not choose objective See the list of course objectives in the Introduction Above.
Be sure to explain why you think these objectives are important. The purpose of this entry is not to tell what you think the objective of your Service Learning Project was; rather, it is, as stated above, to relate your project to specified course objectives.
Narrate your experiences on the project each week for seven weeks—unless you combine entries, which is allowed, as long as they meet the minimum word count requirement. Integrate brief references wherever possible to the six values studied in Week 1.
Be sure to relate your project experiences briefly to specific ideas in each of the Week 12 readings. Ideally, you will synthesize ideas from these readings in entries ; however, you may also do so in entries 1, 2, and 8.
You helped me meet my obligations as a student when I was unwell. I would otherwise be one year behind if I had not used your services. This approach asks students to work as many as 10 to 20 hours a week in a community setting. As in traditional internships, students are charged with producing a body of work that is of value to the community or site. However, unlike traditional internships, service internships have on-going faculty-guided reflection to challenge the students to analyze their new experiences using discipline-based theories.
Service internships focus on reciprocity: Community-based action research is similar to an independent study option for the student who is highly experienced in community work. This approach can be effective with small classes or groups of students. In this model, students work closely with faculty members to learn research methodology while serving as advocates for communities.
This model assumes that students are or can be trained to be competent in time management and can negotiate diverse communities. The course instructor serves as the advisor for the directed study option. Such arrangements require departmental approval and formal student registration. There are many ways to integrate community engagement into an existing course, depending on the learning goals, the size of the class, the academic preparation of the students, and the community partnership or project type.
